Welcome to first grade!! Here is some information that you will find helpful for our school year!
Daily Folders: Each day your child will bring home a plastic folder. Inside this folder is a calendar that we will use to monitor and record your child’s behavior each day. Please initial the calendar each day and send the folder back. This is also a good place to put notes, lunch $, book orders, etc as I will check them each day. On Fridays, I will send a newsletter and other notes from school in this folder.
Star Kid: Each week of school one person will be chosen as the star kid of the week. This is a way for us to celebrate every child in the class. On Friday the Star Kid book will be sent home with your child. Please complete your child’s part of the book and return it as soon as possible. They will have special privileges in the classroom the whole week.
Good Citizen Awards are given out each month to those students who show hard work, follow the rules, and treat others and school property respectfully. Each student can earn it one time during the year. However, they may lose it if the proper behavior isn’t maintained.
Reading is a very important part of our first grade curriculum. All first graders are divided up into reading groups based on their performance level. Your child may not have their homeroom teacher for reading. Your child’s reading teacher will send home a reading folder each day. This is how we will send home completed work and other information about reading. Please have your child read whatever is assigned, initial and return to school everyday.
Homework Menu: Each month there will be a “homework menu” that will be sent home with activities for you and your child to complete during the month. We would like for you to choose 15 of those activities and mark which ones your child has completed. This will give you ideas of things to work on at home. This will be attached in the homeroom folder each month with the behavior calendar.
PBIS – First graders are expected to follow the four dragon zone rules of being respectful, responsible, cooperative and safe. We will use Dragon Zone slips as rewards in our classroom.
Snacks: We will have a snack time each day around 9:45. Please send a healthy snack each day for your child to eat. I will have some crackers for those that forget. Please do not send pop or candy. We have some severe peanut allergies so please try to avoid sending peanut butter snacks.
Water: We do have a drinking fountain in our room but if you would like for your child to have a water bottle at school, you may send one. They will be kept in a special place and will be sent home periodically for washing.
Lunch Prices: The meal prices for this year are as follows: $1.25 for breakfast (served 7:45-8), $2.05 for student lunches and $3.70 for adult lunches. You are welcome to join us for lunch any time!
$10.00 Party Money: Please send $10 to be used for the Fall Party, Holiday Party and Valentine’s Day Party as well other classroom celebrations. PLEASE SEND CASH by September 29th.
Birthdays: If you wish, you may to send a store bought treat to school on your child’s birthday or the closest day to it if it’s on a weekend. Please send enough for 20. We will celebrate summer birthdays during the month of May. I will contact you if you have a child with a summer birthday.
Homework: Your child’s homework will consist of reading through the reading folder each night and completing the homework menu each month.
Grading Procedures: First Grade uses the grading system of E (Excellent), S (Satisfactory), P (Progressing) and I (Improvement Needed).
