Reading Mastery Curriculum
All of first grade uses the Reading Mastery Curriculum. Our students are grouped based on their performance so each group is in a little different place than the others. We do this to best meet the needs of all students and to be able to teach all students to mastery. This program helps all kids to:
* know consonant and vowel sounds
*blend consonant and vowels to decode phonetic words
*develop fluency
*develop comprehension
*write complete sentences
*practice their newly acquired skills by reading to their parents daily.
Another very important aspect of the reading program are our daily take home folders and our goal for each child to read 50 books during the year.
Daily 5
During our literacy time in our classroom, we use a structure called The Daily 5. At the beginning, this structure is put into place helping teach children to be independent on literacy tasks. Once students are taught the behaviors of the tasks and build their stamina for independence, I will be able to work with individuals and small groups. We also use CAFE, which is a visual aid for organizing the reading strategies your children will be learning to read books at their own level.
Once children are taught to build their stamina they will be engaged each day in these research-based meaningful tasks:
